How to Prepare Your Music for Mastering

If you are new to the world of recording music we've made this handy to guide to help you get the most out of your master.

How long will it take me (roughly)? 20 minutes

What will I need?

- Computer
- DAW (Digital Audio Workstation)

What I should already have?

- A Well-Balanced & Professional Sounding Mix (that you are happy with)
- A Reference Track (a professional song that you want your mix to resemble)

Pre-master prep:

Step 1 : Remove any processing on the master bus that affects volume
This can be easily overlooked but of course can be extremely detrimental for the mastering engineer when it comes to loudness processing. This includes any brick-wall limiters, gain plugins etc.
Step 2 : Listen for the rubbish stuff
Very carefully listen to your individual tracks within your mix with the sole intention of identifying any unwanted sounds such as clicks, headphone bleed, pops, ticks etc. Going the extra mile to do this will prevent your mastering engineer from having to compensate for it. Listening for these elements in a full mix can be tricky and may not be obvious, but when processing is applied to the mix, these elements could be accentuated.
Step 3 : Leave a noise floor
Sounds crazy right? Allowing a few seconds either before or after the song to allow the fingerprint of any unwanted noise to come through (this may be from microphones such as a buzz or hiss) will help the mastering engineer to apply any transparent noise reduction if required.
Step 4 : Clean Labelling
This important factor doesn’t just stop at the stage of sending the tracks off for mixing. Different versions of mixes such as instrumental, radio friendly etc. deserve clear names so the mastering engineer knows exactly what they're working with. Give the all files a name easy to comprehend such as ‘Version 1 Instrumental, Version 2 Radio Friendly’ etc.
Step 5 : Bounce with audio and leave space at the end
Speaking from experience, unless you have each reverb or delay or other effect fading out at the end of the mix exactly how you want, a safe option is to bounce your mix leaving the audio tail in place with plenty of time running after the song ends. This will prevent the possibility of straight reverb cut-offs at the end which sound unnatural and will force the engineer to compensate for it.
Step 6 : Don’t peak at 0dBFS on the master bus.
Peaking at 0dBFS is a complete no-no when bouncing your final mix to be mastered. This will cause havoc when trying to applying processing to the track during the master stage. Whilst there is no definitive answer to how loud you should bounce your mix, setting the loudest section of the song to peak at around 6dB or lower is a good starting point. Remember, the song can always be turned up to the desired volume during the mastering stage, it cannot be turned down for processing.
Step 7 : File formats and reference tracks
44.1khz, 24bit .WAV files are the standard format to send bounce your mixes as. DO NOT send .mp3 files. Reference tracks are greatly welcomed by all engineers so they can work towards something that you happy with the sound of from the get go.
