How to Prepare Your Music for Mixing

If you are new to the world of recording music we've made this handy to guide to help you get the most out of your mix.

How long will it take me (roughly)? 1 hour

What will I need?

- Computer
- DAW (Digital Audio Workstation)

What I should already have?

- Recorded Multiple Takes of all Instruments/Vocals (of which you are happy with)
- A Reference Track (a professional song that you want your mix to resemble)

Pre-mix prep:

Step 1 : Clean up the tracks
It’s subtle, but effective. Removing any unwanted noise from your tracks such as a vocalists breath before a line or a chair creaking in the background before a guitar part comes in will make a huge difference. Bonus points for applying subtle fade in/outs to each track which will prevent any possible unwanted pops.
Step 2 : Comp your takes into the tracks you want mixing
Comping is the process of combining the best parts of several takes into one master-take. Unless you are hiring us to make the decisions on which takes we believe are best, this is a huge time saver on our end and you have control over exactly what you want to use.
Step 3 : Turning off processing prior to bouncing
Whilst you may have instruments with plugins on them that are sounding fantastic individually, this does not necessarily mean that they will mix well together. By all means, do send a copy of the tracks with processing on as well as we can then have further understanding of the type of sound you are looking for from your music.
Step 4 : Clear Labelling and Organisation
Nothing fancy, but it saves us a headache if there is a track with a file name that doesn’t indicate what instrument. Simply labelling tracks as ‘Kick In, Kick Out, Rhythm Guitar 1, Rhythm Guitar 2, Bass Guitar, Lead Guitar etc. will do nicely. Also, how you may set up your session may not be clear to others, so purposely arranging your tracks in a clear and concise order is a win. Applying markers for the different sections throughout the song (Verse, Chorus, Bridge etc.) will also benefit the mix engineer throughout the process.
Step 5 : Take a step back
Recording and composing a song can take time and once that final take is finished, it can be tempting to rush off your project to begin the mixing process. However, it is vital that you take a step back for a day or two then go back into the project to thoroughly analyse your song and ensure that it’s ready to be sent off. Check that you are happy with the quality and quantity of each track, the pre-mix prep-work and so on.
Step 6 : Time Correction
A track with poor timing will sound poor no matter what processing is applied to it. Therefore, unless it is agreed with the mix engineer that this task is being handed over, it is certainly worth spending as much time as needed to correct the timing prior to sending the tracks to be mixed.
Step 7 : Never too much information!
The more information we receive from you - prior to commencing mixing your music - the more satisfied you'll be with the end result. You may have requests for how you want instruments/vocals to sound, if you can send us examples such as reference tracks, then we can have something to aim for. Include any requests/information or ask any questions that you feel are or could be important.
Step 8 : We use Logic Pro X
If you also use Logic Pro X, then feel free compress the project into a zip file and send it across! If you use another DAW such as Pro Tools, Cubase, Fl Studio, Ableton etc. then we would require you to export all your audio tracks as .WAV files and send them to us. There are a few important steps to take when exporting your tracks to send, watch the following guide on what these steps are:
